Why is my refrigerator not cooling?
If the freezer is cold but the fridge is warm, the evaporator fan or the defrost system is the most likely cause. If both sections are warm, check the condenser coils, the condenser fan and the compressor start relay. A fridge that runs all the time but stays warm often has frost blocking the air path.
- Check the thermostat. The fridge should be set to about 37°F and the freezer to 0°F.
- Look for frost. Ice on the back wall of the freezer points to a defrost failure.
- Listen for the fans. No air from the vents inside means a fan or frost problem.
- Clean the coils. Dusty condenser coils under or behind the fridge make it work harder.
The FDA says to keep the fridge at or below 40°F. If yours is warmer than that for more than a couple of hours, move food to a cooler and call.
How does Utah's hard water and dry air affect refrigerators?
Utah has some of the hardest water in the country, so minerals clog fridge inlet valves, water filters and ice maker fill tubes. The dry air also makes rubber door gaskets crack sooner. A cracked gasket lets warm air in, which adds frost and makes the fridge run longer.
Change the water filter every six months, and wipe gaskets with warm soapy water. If a dollar bill slides out easily when the door is closed on it, the gasket may need replacing.

Should you repair or replace your refrigerator?
Repair usually makes sense when the fridge is under about 10 years old and the repair costs less than half the price of a new one. Fans, defrost parts, valves and boards are almost always worth fixing. A failed compressor on an older, low-cost fridge often is not. Built-in brands like Sub-Zero are almost always worth repairing.
