Dryer Not Heating? 7 Common Causes and Repair Costs in Utah

The drum spins, the timer counts down, and the clothes come out just as wet. A dryer that runs but does not heat is one of the most common appliance calls in Utah, especially in winter when everyone runs more loads. Most causes are simple parts and a clogged vent.

Why is my dryer not heating?

A dryer that tumbles but stays cold usually has one of 7 problems: a blown thermal fuse, a burned-out heating element, a failed high-limit or cycling thermostat, a tripped breaker leg on an electric dryer, a weak igniter or bad gas valve coils on a gas dryer, a clogged vent, or a control fault. Most are fixed in one visit for approx. $150 to $400.

If the checks below do not fix it, our appliance tech team repairs gas and electric dryers from Whirlpool, Maytag, GE, Samsung, LG, Kenmore and Speed Queen across the Wasatch Front, from Kaysville to Spanish Fork.

Is your dryer gas or electric?

Look behind the dryer. A gas dryer has a gas line with a shut-off valve and plugs into a normal 120-volt outlet. An electric dryer plugs into a large 240-volt outlet and has no gas line. The fuel decides which parts make heat, so it tells you where to look first.

What are the 7 common causes?

1. A blown thermal fuse

This one-time safety fuse cuts the heat when the dryer overheats. On many models it also stops the drum. It almost always blows because the vent is clogged, so the vent must be cleaned too.

2. A burned-out heating element

Electric dryers heat with a coil of wire. It can break after years of use. The dryer runs normally, but the air stays cold.

3. A failed thermostat

The high-limit and cycling thermostats turn the heat on and off. When one fails open, the heat never comes on. When one sticks, the dryer can overheat and blow the fuse.

4. A tripped breaker leg

An electric dryer uses two breaker legs. If one trips, the drum can still turn on the other, but there is no heat. Reset the breaker fully off and back on.

5. A weak gas igniter

On gas dryers the igniter glows to light the burner. As it weakens, it may glow without lighting the gas, or not glow at all.

6. Bad gas valve coils

The coils open the gas valve once the igniter is hot. When they fail, the burner lights for a short time and then goes out, or never lights.

7. A clogged vent

Lint in the vent traps heat and moisture. Clothes take longer, the dryer overheats, and safety parts trip. Utah homes with long vent runs to the roof or a basement wall are most at risk.

What can you check safely?

  1. Clean the lint screen and check its housing for buildup.
  2. Reset the breaker fully off and back on for an electric dryer.
  3. Check the gas valve behind a gas dryer is fully open, in line with the pipe.
  4. Feel the vent outside while the dryer runs. Strong, warm airflow is good. Weak airflow means a clog.
  5. Straighten the duct behind the dryer and replace crushed foil duct with rigid or semi-rigid metal.
  6. Run a timed dry on high for 10 minutes and check for heat.

Unplug the dryer before you move it or open a panel, and shut off the gas valve on a gas dryer. Do not bypass a thermal fuse. It is there to stop a fire.

Why does the vent matter so much in Utah?

Utah winters keep dryers busy, and many homes vent through long runs to a roof cap or a basement window well. Snow can block a low wall vent, and birds often nest in roof caps in spring. A blocked vent makes the dryer overheat, which blows the thermal fuse and wears out thermostats and elements faster.

  • Clean the full vent run once a year, more often for large families.
  • Keep snow clear of low wall vents after a storm.
  • Check that the outside flap opens freely when the dryer runs.
  • Keep vent runs as short and straight as you can.

What does dryer repair cost in Utah?

Most dryer repairs in Utah cost approx. $150 to $400 with parts and labor. The diagnostic visit is usually approx. $95 to $150. A thermal fuse or thermostat sits at the lower end. An element, igniter or gas valve coils sit in the middle. A control board sits near the top. You get the price before work starts.

Repair or replace?

Dryers are simple machines, and heat problems are usually one affordable part. Repair almost always makes sense on a dryer under about 12 years old. If the drum, motor and heat all fail on an old unit, compare the quote with a new dryer.

Why is my dryer running but not heating?

On electric dryers, the usual causes are a blown thermal fuse, a burned-out heating element, a bad high-limit thermostat or one leg of the 240-volt breaker tripped. On gas dryers, a weak igniter, failed gas valve coils or a closed gas valve are common. A clogged vent can cause the fuse to blow on both.

Why does my dryer thermal fuse keep blowing?

The fuse blows when the dryer overheats, and a clogged vent is the usual reason. Replacing the fuse without cleaning the vent means it will blow again. Long vent runs and crushed foil ducts behind the dryer are common culprits.

How much does dryer repair cost in Utah?

Most dryer repairs in Utah cost approx. $150 to $400 with parts and labor. Thermal fuses, elements and igniters usually fall inside that range. The diagnostic visit is usually approx. $95 to $150.

Is a dryer that runs without heat a fire risk?

It can be a warning sign. If the cause is a clogged vent, lint is building up where it can catch fire. Stop using the dryer, clean the vent and have the safety parts checked before you run it again.
